These 2 French postcards confuse me. They seem like photos documenting common family events, but the members are all too joyfull and just too carefully posed.


The back holds next to no information. A serial number, a monogramme that could be ARL, ARS or AR plus another letter and the word ‘bromure’ is the only information printed there. Googling this data has turned up zero leads. The style of the clothing and the images’ faded quality suggests they may hail from the 1960s. Perhaps they are older.


Were these curious idealised pictures – they seem like advertisements – used to send felicitations or for some other purpose? Who might have been interested in these genre scenes? Did each series unfold like a soap opera, a story that would entice buyers? Maybe someday I’ll come across an explanation…
