Yuriy Kruchak – Yulia Kostereva

The image reproduced on this postcard never ceases to be intriguing. People often speak about being burdened by various ills – the weight of which can literally drag them down – this picture puts a twist on the subject.

It’s not that the man has managed to shed hardship; his earthly belongings are still with him. The difference is that they float above him. They seem to literally be lighter than air. Yet despite this he is still struggling.

Perhaps he aimed to avoid problems by trying to rise above them, but the impact of the wind and the rope that connects him to his belongings are causing difficulties and discomfort. The outcome, if not tragic, is quite ironic.

This postcard is credited to Yuriy Kruchak & Yulia Kostereva, Ukrainian artists that are also founders of Open Space in Kiev. Their art work examines behaviour and the way we interact with the material world.
